Top Tips to Keep Your Extensions Looking Flawless—No Matter Your Routine
Whether you’re rocking length, volume, or both, your dream hair deserves dreamy care. Follow these expert-backed tips to keep your hair investment looking polished, seamless, and stunning between salon visits.
1. Brush Like a Pro
Use an extension-safe brush (boar bristle mixed with nylon).
Section & Support: Hold your hair at the base of the weft or bond and gently brush from ends to roots.
Brush morning, night, and before washing to prevent tangling and matting.
2. Wash with Intention
Frequency: Wash 2-3x a week (or as recommended for your lifestyle).
Products Matter: Use sulfate-free, alcohol-free, and extension-safe shampoos and conditioners. (We love Goldie Locks Hair Care; you can find our extension-safe products here.)
Prep: Brush before getting your hair wet.
Wash: Gently cleanse your scalp with vertical or horizontal fingertips—no circular scrubbing!
Condition: Mid-shaft to ends only—avoid bonds or wefts.
3. Dry with Care
Never go to bed with wet hair. (Non-negotiable.)
Squeeze water out of the hair with the grain of the hair working downward
Pat hair dry with a towel—no rough rubbing.
Apply a heat protectant and blow dry the roots first, especially near bonds or wefts, to avoid mildew or slippage.
Finish drying mid-shaft to ends with a round or paddle brush.
4. Style Smart
Always use a heat protectant.
Keep hot tools below 325°F. (Never set irons and hot tools higher than what you would bake cookies at)
Avoid applying direct heat to bonds, keratin tips, or wefts.
Sleep in a loose braid or ponytail on a silk pillowcase to minimize friction and tangles.
5. Keep It Tangle-Free
Apply a leave-in conditioner or light detangler daily, especially to the ends.
Avoid products with heavy oils or silicones near the root or attachment areas—they can weaken bonds or cause slippage.
For beach days or workouts, braid your hair to prevent matting. Also, use mineral-based sunscreen to avoid discoloration of hair extensions; we have one here.
6. Regular Maintenance Is Key
Follow your custom maintenance schedule (typically every 6–10 weeks, depending on the method).
Don’t skip your salon visits—we’ll check your scalp, reposition your extensions, and refresh your look to keep your hair and natural growth healthy.
7. Traveling or Active Lifestyle?
Pack a silk scrunchie, a mini detangler, and a travel-size dry shampoo; we can get these for you at your before-trip appointment.
For the pool or ocean, wet your hair with clean water first, apply a leave-in conditioner, and braid it before swimming. Avoid submerging hair, but if it happens, rinse and wash it immediately afterward.
